Indian Evangelist beaten up in Tumkur, Karnataka

By James Varghese

10/12/07 INDIA (ANS) — The almost daily violence against Indian Christians by Hindu radicals, continues apparently unabated, with news that an evangelist was beaten up severely by Hindu gang in Tumkur in Karnataka State , India on Sunday, October 7.

This news was carried on the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) website — www.persecution.in.

According to the GCIC story, the beaten man was Simon (31), a village missionary, who works for a Christian Radio program called Vishva Vani, in Mayasandra Village , Turuvekere Taluk, Tumkur Dist of Karnataka. He had been working amongst these poor villagers for the past six months.

This incident took place as Simon was conducting a church worship service along with the Vishva Vani’s Karnataka state coordinator, Mr. Timothy, in a church. As the service was occurring, a group of about 100-120 Hindu radicals barged in and began abusing the believers in vulgar language, and accusing Simon of participating in “forceful conversions”.

They then started beating up Simon from 11 am to 12.30 pm. Brother Simon sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Adi Chunchunagiri Hospital , on the Bangalore- Mangalore highway, near to Tumkur.

Brother Timothy and some other believers have also sustained minor injuries. The Police have registered complaint against the culprits; however no arrests have been made yet.

Please pray for Brother Simon and his ministry in the village
