04/18/2018 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – In July 2015, al-Shabaab militants stormed a residential estate in Mandera, a town in northeastern Kenya near the Somali border, killing 14 Christian quarry workers. Al-Shabaab has attacked Mandera many times due to its close proximity to the unsecured border.

During the early morning attack, Charles Njiri, a Christian husband and father of five, was killed. His wife Esther was left to care and provide for their children alone. Esther told International Christian Concern (ICC), “I thought a year will not end before me and my children die due to trauma and lack. We were in a moment of darkness, for Charles was our family protector and primary breadwinner. We would not see ourselves continuing to live without a person who sacrificed everything for the sake of his family. My husband was a treasure to us.”

The family’s journey has been one of tears and despair, but Esther has shown resilience and determination as she has assumed the responsibility of providing for her children who are still in school. In early 2016, ICC providing Esther with a dairy cow, fodder, and a cow shed to help her generate income and provide milk for her family. During one of our visits to Esther’s hometown, ICC was able to visit her.

Esther’s daughter, Phyllis, told ICC, “At first, we were distraught, angry, and at a loss after our father was killed by the Somali radical Muslims. Life had taken a sudden bitter turn and we could not see a future. We have since picked up ourselves and my mom has been our source of inspiration and income from the quarry work she does and the little savings in her local mothers joint.”

In the past year and a half, Esther’s cow has provided the family with both nourishment and a steady source of income. Esther has worked hard to ensure that she is able to provide for her family, despite their hardships.

“I am the happiest woman now because I am selling eight liters of milk daily and I still have two liters for my household. ICC has touched our hearts and lives directly and in a special way. We are so thankful for the gift,” Esther told ICC.

Two years after she received the cow, it had a calf. The three-month old calf is healthy and will continue to provide the family with extra income for years to come. This is a great relief to the family of the late Charles Njiri.

Esther Njiri is one among many Kenyan families ICC has assisted through small livelihood projects in the wake of continued persecution from al-Shabaab. Please continue to pray for the victims of this radical and violent group.
