Christians in Mumbai Protest Against Removal of Roadside Crosses

Christians in Mumbai, India have protested against local authorities efforts to remove or demolish this city’s wayside, or roadside, crosses. According to reports, the city authorities are seeking to remove all roadside crosses that were build in the past 50 years. Local Christians say this is an effort to harass the city’s Christian community. The persecution of Christians in India has dramatically risen in the past two years. Local Christians claim the rise of the Hindu nationalist BJP to India’s central government has encouraged radical Hindus to openly harass and persecution the country’s religious minorities.
11/29/2016 India (UCAN) – Catholics in the western Indian city of Mumbai protested on Nov. 25 against efforts by local authorities to remove or demolish wayside crosses.
The protest was in response to a notice issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation that seeks to remove or demolish all wayside crosses built in the last 50 years.
Christians say that half of the city’s 100 wayside crosses were erected in the last five decades.
Protesters like Godfrey Pimenta of the Watchdog Foundation said the government decision to remove the crosses from public space is “about harassing” the city’s minority Christian community.
