Persecution on the Pitch

Make FIFA denounce religious persecution and include the protection of freedom of religion or belief as a core element of its human rights policy.

Sign Our Petition: Make FIFA Take Action Against Religious Discrimination

Our ministry is deeply concerned with the 2022 FIFA World Cup and its enablement of poor human rights in both competing countries and the host country of Qatar despite their human rights policy and statutes. Several participating countries have had severe violations against the rights of religious minorities. The right to freedom of religion or belief is significantly curtailed in at least three participating countries. Countries like Qatar, Iran, and Saudi Arabia retain the death penalty as a criminal punishment for individuals accused of blasphemy and related offenses. These countries also criminalize proselytization and routinely engage in persecution and violence against religious converts from Islam. With estimates showing that at least 5 billion viewers will watch the tournament, FIFA must clearly communicate that intolerance and discrimination against minority faiths are unacceptable and have no place in the league. ICC urges FIFA to include the protection of freedom of religion or belief as a core element of its human rights policy and to take appropriate action to hold teams accountable for discriminatory practices.
