4/5/2024 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) – Two years after receiving an official initiation from President Joko Widodo, Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Indonesia in early September.

Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Indonesia’s minister of religion, announced the news on March 30 during an event in Central Java. According to a letter the Vatican sent to the Indonesian government, the visit will take place on September 3.

President Widodo invited the pope to visit Indonesia, home to 242 million Muslims, in June 2022 as part of efforts to promote religious tolerance. 

Based on a letter the Vatican sent to the Indonesian government, Pope Francis will be in Indonesia on September 3. 

“This will be an honor for Indonesia,” President Widodo said. 

The president added that he hopes Pope Francis will witness firsthand the diversity and growing religious tolerance among the faithful in Indonesian society. 

According to the Pew Research Center, Indonesia is also home to 29 million Christians – 8.5 million of whom are Catholic.
