05/04/2023 Burkina Faso (International Christian Concern) –Islamic extremist terrorists killed 33 soldiers and injured dozens Thursday in an attack against Burkina Faso’s military.
“During particularly intense combat, the soldiers of the detachment showed remarkable determination when faced with an enemy that came in very large numbers,” the military said in a statement, adding that 40 terrorists were also killed.
Since 2015, militants linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS have increased violent attacks in Burkina Faso. Last month, terrorists targeted Kourakou and Tondobi villages in the country’s north and killed 44 people.
The violence seen in Burkina Faso is part of a broader trend of jihadism which has displaced 2.3 million people in West Africa’s Sahel region.
As of 2023, the country has not been successful in curbing the spread of violence and still struggles with one of the bloodiest jihadist insurrections in the Sahel. The violence and unrest have created the worst humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso’s history. According to the United Nations, one in five citizens—roughly 4.7 million people—are currently in need of humanitarian assistance.
