04/03/2023 India (International Christian Concern) – Last Thursday, three Christians were jailed after being attacked by a mob of radical Hindu nationalists in Uttar Pradesh. Over a dozen Christians sustained injuries, including two pastors. Once the attack was finished, the police arrested the three Christians under false charges of anti-conversion.

According to local sources, at around 2 pm on 30th April, while the prayer was in progress in one of the Christian homes in Daharipatti village, a mob of over 20 people charged into the prayer meeting and started to beat the Christians. The angry mob also damaged four motorbikes belonging to Christians parked at the meeting venue on that day. The Christians fled after seeing the furious mob hurling abuses and attacking them with sticks.

After an hour, the police arrived and took the two pastors and one other believer. They were charged with violating the anti-conversion laws and were sent to Jail. The local Christians are working on getting bail for three people, while their families can only wait helplessly.

The gathering took place at the home of one of the pastors and his very sick daughter. The community has been rallying around the sick child, praying for her health and praising God. By their accounts, she seemed to be getting better. It was during one of these prayer sessions that the attack took place.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, has been one of the 11 states to have anti-conversion laws since November 2020. Ever since, attacks on Christians have skyrocketed. The radical Hindu nationalists misuse the law to target Christians to harass and intimidate the Christian communities in the state.
