American evangelist Dwight L. Moody famously said that someday folks would read about his death in the newspaper. But do not believe it because those born in the Spirit would very much be alive – with Christ in heaven and for eternity. Truer words have never been spoken according to God’s promises to us in Scripture.

Jesus said to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this (John 11:25-26)?”

Moody was a giant of the Christian faith, smart and ambitious. The evangelist garnered international acclaim. And like us, Moody had highs and lows, with a low point being the Great Chicago Fire that destroyed his home and church in 1871.

At the end of his life, with his family at his bedside, Moody said aloud, “Earth recedes, and heaven opens before me.”

Moody’s son, Will, who was by his father’s bedside, assumed his father was dreaming. “No, this is no dream, Will,” Moody proclaimed. “It is beautiful! It is like a trance! If this is death, it is sweet. There is no valley here! God is calling me, and I must go.” And he died a brief time later, on Dec. 26, 1899.

Do not fret for a minute over the things in this life. Those who have put their faith in Christ will spend eternity with Him. That is our true home. It is a suitable time for us to ask, “What is a worthy calling in my life?”
