04/18/2022 China (International Christian Concern) – The lawyer of an imprisoned Christian in China’s Guizhou was unable to meet with his client’s judge. His request to obtain the notice of indictment was also rejected.

On March 31, the lawyer of jailed elder Zhang Chunlei from Love (Ren’ai) Reformed Church went to Guizhou’s Guiyang Intermediate People’s Court with the hope of meeting the judge and getting the documents for elder Zhang’s case. His efforts ended up being in vain.

Although Guiyang city’s Procuratorate has already transferred Zhang’s case to the court on January 27, little is known about the latest update on his legal proceeding. Whether Zhang’s trial will take place soon remains unclear.

Elder Zhang was detained by the authorities last March and later charged with “fraud” for collecting offerings for his church that were not vetted by the state.  Last November, the authorities also alleged that Zhang was involved in “subversion of state power.”

Elder Zhang has had limited access to his lawyer since the government claims that, for security reasons, no details can be revealed about Zhang’ case. The last time elder Zhang met with his lawyer was on January 5.

The wife of elder Zhang, Yang Aiqing, asked for continuous prayers for her and elder Zhang. She said via WeChat, “God is our mighty fortress. He reigns in Chunlei’s life forever!” She also used Amos 5:24 to express her wish, “But let justice roll on like a river and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
