India 02/03/2022 (International Christian Concern) – Last week, an online event was held in celebration of India’s 72nd year as a republic. The event was called “Protecting India’s Pluralist Constitution” and featured many speakers, including India’s former Vice President. The former VP expressed his concern with rising nationalism, saying that the trend “disputes the well-established principle of civic nationalism and imaginary practice of cultural nationalism.” He called out the “rising intolerance” and “disquiet and insecurity” as he noticed citizens mistreating each other based on faith.
The founder of the Catholic-Christian Secular Forum shared similar thoughts. He shared, “The evidence is there for the world to see. There are media reports of attacks on minorities, canceling the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registrations of international NGOs like Compassion International, Amnesty International, etc., hate speech by elected legislators, and violence by fringe rightist groups.”
The online event was co-sponsored by 17 organizations, including Hindus for Human Rights. Former statesmen and humanitarian groups of differing faiths united to fight against persecution hold promise for possible change.
