United Kingdom 12/09/2021 (International Christian Concern) – An independent legal panel in the United Kingdom has ruled that the People’s Republic of China has committed genocide against the Uyghur people in its Xinjiang province.
The Uyghur Tribunal, formed by renown prosecutor of the Slobodan Milosevic trials Geoffrey Nice, was made up of several human rights experts and lawyers, who were commissioned to investigate allegations claiming the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was conducting a genocide against its Uyghur population. This allegation has remained in the spotlight of many western governments, following reports of alleged crimes against humanity committed against the Uyghurs Muslims of the Xinjiang province in western China. These atrocities include the arbitrary imprisonment, torture, forced labor, restrictions on their freedom of religion, as well as reports of forced sterilizations, a major factor to the allegation of genocide.
Following over a year of expert and witness testimonies, the tribunal released its verdict on Thursday, Dec 9th – the CCP had committed genocide and several other crimes against humanity against the Uyghur population. While this tribunal verdict is not legal binding, it provides an impetus for western governments to take the case beyond allegations. Further, the tribunal is a major indicator of the growing global outrage directed towards China’s treatment of religious and ethnic minorities.
This verdict follows a week marked by diplomatic protests against China’s human rights abuses. Multiple western governments have announced plans for a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics commencing in February 2022. As of Thursday, the United States, Lithuania, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Kosovo have all announced that their will be no diplomatic or political attendance in Beijing.
