Third Wave of COVID Rocks Sri Lanka
05/04/2021 Sri Lanka (International Christian Concern) – Churches across Sri Lanka have suspended services, weddings, and schools due to the third wave of COVID surges. Catholic priests across the country are urging children and parents to pray the rosary for safety and protection for the people of Sri Lanka.
India’s critical situation has caused families to flee to Sri Lanka for safety. The Sri Lankan government has improved the health sector to control the third wave the best they can. However, Dr. Upul Dissanayake at Colombo National Hospital said the new COVID variants could kill a perfectly healthy person.
Upul Rohana, a member of the Association of Public Health Inspectors, said hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are dying in their homes due to a lack of emergency medical officers to take them to the hospitals. Oxygen supplies are dangerously low, causing more deaths.
According to UCA News, Sri Lanka COVID numbers rose to 111,705, and 1,843 new cases at the beginning of May. Health officials blame the Sri Lankan government for allowing Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations to happen in large gatherings in mid-April.
