(International Christian Concern) – In a recent episode of ICC’s podcast, Into the Deep, Jeff King interviewed retired 17-term congressman, Frank Wolf. During his time in the US Congress, Wolf was its lead champion for international religious freedom and the persecuted Church.
In the interview, the two discussed China’s crackdown on the Church and its massive oppression of its own people.
Jeff King:
If you’re in the human rights sphere, [you have to wonder] how China’s poisonous leadership has gotten away with oppression of their own people. They know they have to hold on to power [by force]; otherwise they will be called to account for what they have done.
They have killed, imprisoned, and tortured, millions of their own people. So, is China our friend?
Frank Wolf:
I’m going to raise a very controversial issue with you that not many people really want to talk about. Maybe they don’t really know about it. But before I do, the Chinese people are wonderful people. In fact, China will be the largest Christian nation soon. And when you’re with the Christians in China, really, they’re strong. [But], the Chinese government is fundamentally evil. I pray for the fall of the Chinese government every night…
Here’s an issue that no one seems to want to talk about. There are many major law firms and public relations firms in [Washington, D.C.] who have… [former] members of Congress and [retired] high-ranking [US] officials, who [are paid] to represent the Chinese government and companies controlled by the Chinese government.
[Given] what they’re doing with [regards to] the Catholic Church, what they’re doing with regard to the Protestant pastors, what they’re doing [by imprisoning] three million Muslims, what they’re doing with the Falun Gong, actually killing them… no law firm or public relations firm, particularly those with former congressmen, senators, and high-ranking US government officials, should be representing the Chinese government.
Quite frankly, there ought to be an effort…to call out and urge these law firms to drop the Chinese government as a client. Because, in essence, when you represent the Chinese government, you’re hurting our government. You’re hurting…the Chinese Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Falun Gong, and the Chinese people.
Jeff King:
A prominent note from Frank Wolf is his message to the US Church. In general, what is the US Church facing in terms of religious freedom?
Frank Wolf:
The Bible tells us, as Christians, as believers, we have an obligation to be involved [in government]. In Luke 4:18-19, [it says] “to release the oppressed.” Ecclesiastes 4:1: “I saw the tears of the oppressed.” Read Ecclesiastes 4:1; it’ll make you cry.
In Hebrews, [it says] remember those in prison as if you yourselves were suffering… So I say to be a Christian in a post-Holocaust world, one must speak out against what is taking place against Christians…
I would urge everyone here to read Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from the Birmingham Jail… He said, ‘In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.’… So if you’re the Church and you’re not speaking, you really are speaking. And if you don’t act, you really are acting.
