09/21/2020 China (International Christian Concern) – Since China’s President Xi Jinping took office in 2013, he has pursued strict measures ensuring loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Educators are significantly censored on the materials allowed in the classroom. “Ideological failures” include any mention of God or religion, and are considered grounds for employment termination. There are three ways used by the CCP which ensures that teachers follow these restrictions.

According to Bitter Winter, teachers are observed in their classrooms. These observers watch for “reactionary thoughts” or “improper remarks.” In other words, they are looking for any language of democracy or variation from Marxism.

Second, the Chinese Ministry of Education demanded teachers “not say or do anything against the Party line in their educational or teaching activities.

Third, the Education Bureau releases a proposal to each school which establishes an ‘ideological control team.’ The CCP deploys these teams to ensure teachers do not influence their classroom with religious or ideological differences.
