09/01/2020 India (International Christian Concern) – A church in India’s southern state of Telangana was completely demolished in the middle of the night on August 30, 2020. According to a local pastor, radical Hindu nationalists are likely behind the demolition of the church after months of threats.

According to Pastor Spurgen, a leader of the Khammam District Pastors’ Association, Grace of Jesus Church, located in Kanapur village, was torn down by unknown assailants in the middle of the night on August 30.

Pastor Spurgen reports the head pastor’s wife heard loud noises coming from the church building at around midnight. When she and her husband went to investigate, they found the church building completely destroyed and several unidentified people running away.

In addition to the church building being completely destroyed, the church’s sound system, pulpit, and other furniture were damaged or destroyed. According to Pastor Kumar, head pastor at Grace of Jesus Church, the damages to the church are estimated to be approximately $10,000.00.

“Pastor Kumar has been threatened a number of times,” Pastor Spurgen told International Christian Concern (ICC). “About six months ago, Pastor Kumar registered a case against some people who attacked him after a BJP leader named A. Anjeneyelu told Pastor Kumar he must vacate his church. Anjeneyelu falsely claimed that the plot of land the church is built on belongs to him.

Grace of Jesus Church was started in 2012 and presently hosts a congregation of nearly 150 people. The incident has been reported to the police and an FIR has been filed.
