Monks Face Extreme Threat from Successful Land Grab

08/25/2020 Vietnam (International Christian Concern) – Government-led land-grabbers successfully seized part of the monastery’s land called Cross Hill in Thừa Thiên Huếprovince. Just two weeks ago, on August 7, a group of protesters came to threaten the monks.

These groups include local government officials, employees, and security forces from the People’s Municipal Committee. According to AsiaNews, “‘Red capitalists’ use violence, abductions, and communist ideology to make the monks’ lives impossible [in order] to force them out.”

Last Thursday, 50 aggressive people trespassed onto the property and took part in the Cross Hill section of the monastery with barbed wire and poles. All while shouting slogans, handing out malicious flyers slandering the monks and the monastery, while breaking Vietnam’s COVID-19 restrictions.

The government sells more of the land belonging to the monks to the highest paying tourism company with each passing year. The Catholic community is losing its clergy and religious freedom. Even local police are colluding with the thug to tolerate their actions.

Their ultimate goal is to kick out the monks, thus leaving the local Catholic community of 70,000 people without clergy. In response, the monks in Thiên An asked foreign embassies and international human rights organizations to use every peaceful means to protect truth, justice and peace for the religious of the monastery.
