48 Three-Self Churches Shut Down After Lockdown Eased

06/04/2020 China (International Christian Concern) – In just two weeks’ time, the Yugan county in Jiangxi Province shut down at least 48 Three-Self churches and meeting locations after the COVID-19 lockdown lifted in April. Yugan county is inhabited by more than 1 million people, with over 10 percent Protestants who attend over 300 officially registered Three-Self churches.

Three-Self churches are state-approved institutions, where the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has complete control. The CCP finds the large numbers of Christians to be concerning. Bitter Winter reports that a member of a local Three-Self church, said that officials, including the mayor, of the Shegeng town stormed the church in April and forcibly removed its podium, cross and all other religious symbols.

“Some congregation members wept in distress,” the believer added. “If you try to protest, they will accuse you of fighting against the Communist Party and the central government.”

The CCP is perpetuating trauma from violence and labeling those who disobey them as a terrorist. They arrest anyone who stands in their way. To believe in God is to rebel against the CCP and its leader Xi Jinping. Christians believe that God provides for their needs; the CCP believes that they provide you with a home and food, not God, and as Chinese citizen, one has to be grateful to the party.
