Buhari Again Tries to Claim Boko Haram Weakened

02/25/2020 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – President Buhari of Nigeria has again claimed that his administration has “significantly weakened Boko Haram’s military capability to invade and hold Nigerian territory unchallenged.” This was part of a released statement by the president through his spokesman, Garba Shehu. The statement was a condemnation of the recent attack that took place in Garkida. He is using this statement as a chance to push the idea that his administration has successfully dealt with the Boko Haram insurgency. This is despite the fact that attacks seem to be on the rise again.

President Buhari said, “These occasional and episodic attacks on poor civilians by the terrorists are mere propaganda efforts to portray them as strong in order to fool the public into believing that they haven’t been militarily weakened by our gallant troops.” Yet, reports emerged that they had troops located in Garkida who were unable to or unwilling to respond to the attack that took place there for many hours. The worst of these reports stated that the military actually retreated from Garkida, allowing the terrorists to burn down many homes, churches, and kidnap an unknown number of civilians.

This would indicate that the group has not only not been defeated, but has actually regained much of the strength that they had lost up until early 2018. These so called occasional attacks have already killed at least 250 people in just January and February of 2020. Hundreds more have been injured and dozens have been abducted. The loss of these lives cannot be lessened by saying that the group has been militarily weakened. It is time for President Buhari to admit that his government has not been able to stop this insurgent group. They must find help in the fight against Boko Haram, and must do more to ensure the safety of their citizens.
