10/26/2019 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – Boko Haram has made a major resurgence over the past year. Due to their increased strength and capabilities, the group has begun to retake land, harass military and governmental targets, and cause mass displacement. According to the United Nations Undersecretary-General, Mark Lowcock, the group has displaced more than 140,000 people this year in Borno State alone.

Not only have the activities of the group displaced large number of people, but it has also devastated the economy of the North Eastern State. More than 3 million people are food insecure in a country that has very fertile lands and is in the breadbasket of the continent. This is mostly because many of those most harshly affected by these attacks are the farmers who help provide food for the country.

Mr. Lowcock also stated that though the military has a crucial role to play in fixing the problems caused by Boko Haram, he believes that NGO’s also play crucial role. This is important as Nigeria has recently kicked multiple major NGO’s out of the country because they were allegedly supporting the Boko Haram cause. The government claimed that the groups gave to anyone without screening for those who supported the terrorist group. Now without all of the aid that these groups brought, many people will have to suffer even more through the crisis in Northeast Nigeria.
