Three-Self Church in Anhui Demolished, Church Leadership Detained
10/22/2019 China (International Christian Concern) – On October 19, Chinese authorities in Anhui province detained two pastors after they demolished a church that normally sits more than 3000. A day earlier, a crane tore down the building without notifying the church in advance.
The government first closed off an entrance to the church claiming that it’s for construction safety nearby from October 14 to October 18. But on the 18th, they suddenly informed that the church was to be demolished. It was done in haste that the members did not have the opportunity to save any property inside the church.
Members kneeled before the authorities, pleading them to stop, yet their cry was ignored. Those elderly members who fainted after kneeling for a long time, or those who resided in the compound with disabilities were sent to the hospital and watched.
The director of church committee Geng Yimin, pastor Sun Yongyao, and other committee member(s) were arrested and detained the next day on suspicion of “gathering a crowd to disturb social order.”
Father Francis Liu from Chinese Christian Fellowship of Righteousness told ICC, his attempt to reach out to Three-self church pastors in China to understand the situation has not received any response.
