06/20/2019 West Africa (International Christian Concern) – Terrorist groups in the Sahel region of Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to ISIS in a video released on Saturday. This comes despite ISIS’ failures and loss of power over the past year.

There are several different groups in the Sahel, a part of Sub-saharan West Africa that includes Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria, that have all given their allegiance to Bagdadi and ISIS. These groups include one of the two Boko Haram factions, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), and others. These groups have been devastating much of west Africa for years. This declaration may likely be the group’s attempt to gain new followers and rebuild ISIS’ reputation and power.

As ISIS has lost power over the past few years in the Middle East, many of the groups have actually started gaining power in Africa. Boko Haram, which lost power in 2015, has actually regained much of its power in the past year. There has also been a lot of growth for terrorist groups in new countries like Burkina Faso. Terrorists there have killed over 40 Christians in the past two months, a massive increase from the numbers killed in the past several years.
