05/09/2019 Pakistan (International Christian Concern) – Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who spent almost a decade on death row over false blasphemy charges, has safely exited Pakistan and has been accepted as a refugee in Canada. This brings to a close one of the highest profile and longest running cases of Christian persecution in modern history.

Speaking to the international media, Saif-Ul-Malook, Bibi’s Supreme Court Lawyer, said, “I have inquired within available channels, and according to them she has left for Canada.

According to the Daily Times, a close friend of Bibi confirmed that she had left the country. This friend, who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity, said that Bibi and her husband, Ashiq Masih, had spent the last several weeks getting their documents in order. This friend also said that Bibi was “longing” to see her daughters whom she talked to almost daily from the secure location where she was kept at since her acquittal in October 2018.

Speaking to the Daily Times, Omar Waraich, deputy South Asia Director for Amnesty International, said, “It is a great relief that this shameful ordeal has final come to an end and Asia Bibi and her family are safe.

She should never have been imprisoned in their first place, let along endure the constant threats to her life,” Waraich continued. “This case horrifyingly illustrates the dangers of the country’s blasphemy laws and the urgent need to repeal them.
