02/04/2019 Kenya (International Christian Concern) – Al-Shabaab is using new and more devious tricks in their attempts to recruit young people. For many years, Al-Shabaab and other extremist’s groups did most of their recruiting and radicalization in Mosques. Now, they are using more hidden and subversive means. With an already growing number of Kenyan citizens working with and for the terrorist group, it is concerning to see the group using scholarships and job opportunities to entice new followers.  These types of bribes are hard to resist for the young in Kenya, who are struggling to provide for themselves and their families.

Devolution and Arid and Semi-Arid Lands Chief Administrative Secretary Hussein Dado spoke to parents in Tana River on Monday February 4, trying to warn them of these dangers. He stated that the group is trying to hide their bribes, so the parents have to help their children scrutinize any scholarships or job openings before they are taken. He said that multiple young people had been arrested earlier and that he did not want to see it continue.

When given an opportunity to get ahead in life, many of these young men and women are choosing to take it. Al-Shabaab has been looking to grow their terrorist regime into a full-fledged caliphate for many years. As they continue to hold back the African Union and other outside forces, they have also started growing their numbers in countries outside of Somalia. This has made it harder for countries such as Kenya to stop terror attacks.
