Seven Indian Christians Hospitalized Following Attack by Hindu Radicals
12/31/2018 India (International Christian Concern) – On December 23, two days before Christmas, seven Christians from Kowad village, located in the Kolhapur District of India’s Maharashtra State, were severely injured in an attack by Hindu radicals. The injured Christians were rushed to K.L.E Hospital in Belgaum and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
According to reports, 50 Christians were gathered for prayers at the New Life Church in Kowad when they were attacked by a mob of Hindu radicals on December 23. Local sources reached by International Christian Concern (ICC) claim the mob of 30 radicals are connected to the Hindu Rastra Sena group.
The radicals broke into the hall with masked faces and attacked the Christians using iron rods and knives. As a result, seven Christians sustained serious injuries. The mob then ransacked the hall, damaged cars, motorbikes and musical instruments. The estimated damaged to the Christians community of Kowad is close to $7,200.00. Pastor Mohan Nayak, the pastor of New Life Church, has been conducting worship in Kowad for the past 10 years in a rented hall.
A Christian leader from Kolhapur District told ICC, “The attack on New Life Church is very unfortunate as these Christians are in extreme pain and suffering during Christmas. The goons have targeted the Christmas event and want to create fear and intimidation among Christians. We hope the law will do its part.”
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged with the local police and a case has been registered against the attackers under IPC 295, 307, 326, 142, 143, 147. Police have promised a fair probe into the incident after a Christian delegation met with the superintend of police in Kolhapur. In the days that followed, police arrested six people in connection with the attack on the New Life Church in Kowad.
