Asia Bibi Remains in a Pakistani Prison Converted into a Safe House

11/06/2018 Pakistan (International Christian Concern) – On October 31, Pakistan’s Supreme Court acquitted Asia Bibi, a Christian woman formally on death row for committing blasphemy. This announcement was met with rage by Pakistan’s hardliners who led three days of protests against the court’s decision across the country.

According to news reports, Bibi remains trapped in a Pakistani jail that has been converted into a safe house. According to sources connected to CNN, Pakistan’s army and intelligence services have jurisdiction over the jail and are in charge of her safety.

Many are concerned Bibi will be killed if she is released from prison without protection. Saif-ul-Malook, Bibi’s attorney, was forced to flee Pakistan over the weekend following death threats against him and his family. Bibi’s family, including her husband and children, also remain in Pakistan and recently released a video pleading for help from the UK and US governments.

On Friday, November 2, Pakistan’s’ government struck an agreement with those protesting against Bibi’s acquittal. In that agreement, the government agreed not to oppose a review of the Supreme Court’s decision to acquit Bibi and also agreed to place Bibi on the country’s no exit list, essentially barring Bibi from leaving Pakistan.
