10/06/2018 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – Denis Mukwege, a doctor in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work against sexual violence in warfare. He has worked for decades in this war torn county in the city of Bukavu, one of the most dangerous cities in the country. He helps take care of thousands of women who have sexually assaulted by men in the militias that control much of Eastern DRC.

This award goes to show the amazing work that DR. Mukwege has been doing in service to some of the most vulnerable people in the world. DRC has been unstable and in conflict for more than three decades despite the official end to the war in 2003. There are reportedly as many as 45 different militias and terrorist groups in the eastern DRC that regularly attack and kill civilians.

Many of the Women that Dr. Mukwege treats are in need of surgery and trauma care. He received the award alongside Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who was herself abused by members of ISIS.
