ICC Note:

Pakistan’s Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting made a surprising and confusing speech late December. Marriyum Aurangzeb contended that Christians were a valuable part of Pakistan’s Muslim culture and that Muslims respect Christianity because of the religions’ shared respect for Jesus Christ. In addition, she argued that Christians had made many sacrifices for Pakistan’s development and those sacrifices are appreciated. Such rhetoric is confusing in light of the intentional persecution carried out against Christians. Blasphemy accusations, beatings, and the recent church bombing in Quetta deny such sentiment. Perhaps, Aurangzeb’s words will mark a shift in Pakistan’s treatment of minority Christians. One can only hope.

She told that the constitution of Pakistan also advised equal rights of the minorities as citizens of Pakistan. She said that Christians are a respectable minority for every Pakistani as preserved in the Quaid’s vision.
