06/28/2017 The Philippines (Christian Daily) – Muslims from the besieged city of Marawi in southern Philippines celebrated Eid’l Fitr at Barangay Buruun by trading roses with their Christian hosts as a symbol of peace amid the government’s ongoing war against the Maute terror group.
The Philippine military had stopped its offensives against the Maute group in Marawi to honor the Muslim holiday of Eid’l Fitr, which marked the end of the fasting period of Ramadan. More than 180 families that sought refuge in Buruun gathered for an emotional celebration of the occasion and evacuees shared a meal of roasted cow among themselves, the Manila Bulletin detailed.
“The mood was festive,” the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process said in a statement. “Muslim women broke down in tears, as their Christian counterparts embraced and handed them flowers, symbolizing love and the joyous and conciliatory atmosphere at the center.”
Philippine presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella revealed that the eight-hour ceasefire in Marawi enabled volunteers to rescue six civilians and retrieve one body of a person killed by the Maute group. The rescued individuals include a senior citizen and a two-year-old girl previously trapped inside the besieged city.
