The Vienna Provincial Parliament has become the first European capital to condemn China for the harvesting of organs. The resolution condemns the state-sanctioned harvesting of organs from religious practitioners. It is unknown how many people have had their organs illegally harvested by the Chinese government. China has never admitted to harvesting organs but it has said that it stopped the practice. Some reports claim that 60,000 to 100,000 organ transplants were performed by the regime per year from 2000 to 2015. This issue is of particular concern to religious rights issues, because many of the organ “donors” were religious practitioners who were detained for practicing their faith. Reports claim that the bulk of these organs came from “Falun Gong, Uyghurs, Tibetans, and house Christians” who were prisoners of conscience.

The Vienna Provincial Parliament “condemns the systematic, state-sanctioned organ harvesting from prisoners in the People’s Republic of China,” read the resolution, which was unanimously passed on April 7.

The Chinese regime had carried out organ harvesting “without consent and affects large numbers of Falun Gong adherents and members of politically persecuted, religious, and ethnic minorities,” the resolution continued.
