ICC Note:
Two men in Delhi were arrested on Sunday after harassing and threatening Christians who had gathered for Sunday mass. According to witnesses, the men threatened dire consequences of the Christians continued to gather and practice their religion. This is not the first time this church in Delhi has been attacked. Earlier, the church was vandalized and put under police guard. Attacks on Christians and their places of worship in India have dramatically increased in the last two years. Many blame this trend on the current ruling party, the BJP, and its Hindu nationalist platform.
10/18/2016 India (Times of India) – Two men allegedly forced their way into a church in outer Delhi’s Begampur and threatened the priest and worshippers during the mass on Sunday.
Till sometime back, the church was under police protection after it was vandalized by miscreants. The cover was lifted after the authorities decided that there was no further threat.
The police have arrested the duo. The incident took place around 10am at the Christ Blessing Church in A Block when the priest was holding a mass. A few seemingly drunk men entered the building and started hurling abuses. According to the complainant Manoj Kumar, two men, later identified as Yogender Mathur and Deepak Sharma, threatened them with dire consequences if they didn’t stop holding mass at the church.
After the people gathered at the church forced the miscreants to leave, they registered a complaint at the Begumpur police station.
