ICC Note: The Nigerian Defense Headquarters (DHQ) announced yesterday, June 27, that Boko Haram militants fleeing Nigerian Army troops are disguising themselves as vigilantes and hunters in order to escape death or arrest. Officials warned Nigerians to stay alert because as the Nigerian Army continues to attempt to push the terrorists out of the Sambisa forest, more and more of them will likely take up this method of disguise and utilize it to attack unsuspecting villages. Boko Haram has been active since 2009 in northeastern Nigeria, raping, killing, and abducting thousands, targeting Christians in particular; but recently, the Nigerian Army has increased their efforts to push back against the militants, targeting their hideouts in the Sambisa forest.

06/28/2016, Nigeria (Premium Times) – The Defence Headquarters on Monday said Boko Haram terrorists were fleeing Sambisa Forest disguised as vigilantes and hunters in their bid to escape arrest from troops.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, revealed the terrorists’ new tactic in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

Mr. Abubakar urged the public to beware, adding that the latest tactic was not only for the terrorists to escape arrest but to attack unsuspecting members of the public as was the case in Adamawa.
