ICC Note: Bishop Mascarenhas has demanded that the government take action against Yogi Adityanath, a parliamentarian and member of the BJP party, for his inflammatory remarks against Mother Teresa. Adityanath recently accused Mother Teresa’s work as being a conspiracy for the Christianization of India and the cause of the separatist movement in northern India. The BJP, a party that hopes to make India a Hindu nation, is notorious for treating religious minorities with disdain and animosity. Ever since the BJP gained more control in India, Christians have increasingly suffered at the hands of violent Hindu nationalist groups.
6/27/2016 India (UCAN India) – A church official in India has demanded action against a parliamentarian who accused Mother Teresa of using her social work as a cover for proselytism.
“These kind of statements only show the mentality of one person. I would request the Indian government take action against him and prove its sincerity towards minorities,” Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Ranchi, secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, told ucanews.com.
