ICC Note: Today, Zanzibar will vote in a re-run election after October’s presidential poll failed to produce a clear result on grounds of rigging. Zanzibar’s islands carry a 99 percent Muslim majority that has historically capitalized on post-election riots to target the Christian minority for church arson and violent attacks. When ICC visited Zanzibar in October on the first election day, Christian pastors told us that no matter the result, the streets would be chaos. Christians brace for that possibility as Zanzibaris go to the polls today.

3/20/16 Zanzibar, Tanzania (AllAfrica) — With only a day to the Sunday’s rerun polls, the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) is making final preparations, including tidying up and labelling ballot boxes.

The Citizen yesterday observed ZEC officials and clerks busy preparing indicative cards to be used in voting booths and ballot boxes at the Aecrotanal Hall, which is the storage centre for Urban West region.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, some of the clerks said they were tasked to put the boxes and other materials on order before despatching them to their respective stations.
