According to reports, 15 Dalit Christians have been ‘reconverted’ to Hinduism from Christianity in India’s Tamil Nadu state. Across India, Hindu nationalist groups have been conducting mass reconversion ceremonies targeting religious minorities to convert to Hinduism. There have been many reports that these reconversions were made under pressure of because of inducement on behalf of those running them. 

1/27/2016 India (UCAN) – Fifteen Dalit Christians belonging to five families were ‘re-converted’ to Hinduism at a ‘ghar wapsi’ (homecoming) ceremony near Latheri, Katpadi.

Hindu Munnani organized the ceremony last Tuesday in an Amman temple in Chengimottur, Vellore district, the Hindu news paper reported.

The five families were involved in farming and lived in the Adi Dravidar Colony in Chengimottur, Latheri.

“This is the first ‘ghar wapsi’ ceremony in Vellore district,” said K. Magesh, zonal president, Hindu Munnani, Vellore. According to him these persons had become Christians some eight to 10 years ago and “they were re-converted to Hinduism during the ceremony.”

He said Hindu Munnani people contacted and counseled them on the need to return to Hinduism and they expressed the desire to return to Hinduism. “So, we arranged a ritual that was attended by several villagers,” he said.
