ICC Note: Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari considers the possibility of banning the hijab if Boko Haram suicide bombings continue in northern Nigeria. The hijab is a veil Muslim women wear to cover their heads and bodies after reaching puberty as a modesty measure. In the last several months, Boko Haram has used young girls as suicide bombers, concealing explosives underneath hijabs. Neighboring Chad has already banned them.

12/31/15 Nigeria (AllAfrica) – President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his government may ban the use of hijab by muslim women as a result of the use of female suicide bombers by Boko Haram insurgents.

He made this declaration during the presidential media chat.
