ICC Note: Just days after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari declared Boko Haram defeated, gunmen have struck a town outside Maiduguri with rocket propelled grenades and a suicide bomb, killing 21 and injuring nearly 100. The attack occurred Sunday evening and bore all the typical marks of the kind of assault the world has come to expect from Boko Haram – mass casualties, indiscriminate firing, heavy military-grade weaponry. The deadly raid shows that Buhari’s politicking is just that, another set of hollow statements by Nigerian politicians seemingly more interested in legacy building than in bringing and end to the horror.

Gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades fired from three trucks during the raid on Sunday evening.
Hours later a female suicide bomber killed one person as people queued in the morning by a mosque in the city.
Last week, Nigeria’s leader said the war against Islamist Boko Haram militants had been “technically won”.
