ICC Note:  Boko Haram killed a Nigerien soldier in a raid on a prison in southeastern Niger on Sunday, according to government and humanitarian reports.  The attack was likely an attempt to free other detained Boko Haram insurgents, and also resulted in the death of three of the militants.  Boko Haram has increased its assaults since the commencement of the Muslim holiday month of Ramadan.

7/12/15, Niamey, Niger (Business Standard) – A soldier and three Boko Haram members died today when the Islamists raided a prison in southeastern Niger in a likely bid to free detained colleagues, humanitarian and government sources said.

The attack on the prison at Diffa, near the border with Nigeria, occurred between 0000 and 0100 GMT, a humanitarian source said.

“They killed a captain of the prison guard and three of the attackers died,” the source said, adding that they “came on foot” and were probably trying to free some Boko Haram members held in the prison.

Two other jail guards were injured, the source said. The attackers were dressed in army uniforms and had grenades and assault rifles.
