ICC Note: Fulani herdsmen have reportedly attacked Christian mourners at a burial in Benue state, killing one person and injuring several others. According to eyewitnesses, about 50 heavily armed Fulani herders surprised the mourners by emerging from behind the bush that was surrounding them. Attacks from Fulani herders on innocent, unarmed Christians in “Middle-Belt” Nigeria have become all too common. While government officials continue to constitute these consistent attacks simply as the outworking of age-old land disputes between Muslim Fulani herders and Christian farmers, the level of sophisticated weapons and coordination witnesses have observed during these attacks suggests organization that transcends the historic squabbles.
