Two Christian schools in the Gambia have been forcibly closed by that country’s Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for failing to provide Muslim students with Islamic teaching, as is required by Gambian law.

11/17/2014 The Gambia (JollofNews) – Authorities in the Gambia yesterday ordered the immediate closure of two Christian missionary schools in the country for ‘failing to allow the teaching of Islamic education’.

Brikama Methodist Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School and Longman Memorial Lower Basic School, which are one of the top schools in the country were ordered to cease operation by Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education without prior warning.

Although the two schools are Christian schools, the government said their failure to include the Islamic teachings in their curriculum for Muslim students contravenes the laws of the Gambia.
