Taken form the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria on the night of April 14th, more than 215 girls are reportedly still being held captive by Islamic militants. 09/26/2014 Nigeria (NBC) – One of hundreds of schoolgirls kidnapped by a brutal Nigerian terrorist group has been found wandering in the bush in a remote region of the country, police said Friday. It was not clear if the 20-year-old had escaped or been released by the militants after she was found “heavily traumatized and not very stable” near the town of Mubi in Adamawa state, police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu told NBC News.
Ojukwu said the woman was identified as one of the nearly 300 schoolgirls abducted from their dorm in Chibok by the al Qaeda-linked sect Boko Haram in April. The incident sparked an international campaign focused around the Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. Despite support from celebrities including Michelle Obama none of the girls were rescued. Some escaped in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but the woman found Wednesday was the first to be recovered in months. The kidnapping was just one incident in a campaign of terror waged by Boko Harm, which aims to set up an Islamic state in the Muslim-majority north of Nigeria.
