Sunday, August 24th, Boko Haram, a radical Islamic insurgency that has perpetrated a campaign of terror against the Nigeria people for years, declared former Christian strongholds in the country’s increasingly Islamic north as part of the Islamic caliphate. While it remains unclear whether Boko Haram’s self-declared caliphate will coexist with or compete against the Islamic State across parts of Iraq and Syria, it’s clear that Boko Haram intends to impose Sharia law on what it now considers its territory. Reports allege that Christians are being targeted by Boko Haram militants, that Christian men have been beheaded, their widows enslaved, and their children forcefully converted to Islam. ICC is actively working with local partners to assist displaced Christian families across the country.
