In the wake of particularly severe instances of persecution, many Pakistani Christians have sought to leave their country for the relative safety of Sri Lanka or other neighboring nations. Recently, however, these asylum-seeking believers have reported being met with illegal action, from both Pakistani and Sri Lankan government officials, preventing them from leaving their home country or even deporting them from Sri Lanka back to Pakistan. Despite registering with the UNHCR, the UN’s refugee agency, these Christians have found little protection or assurance of refugee status from the government of Pakistan.
