“Christian persecution [in Mauritania] has increased in recent years. Churches were reportedly forced to close in 2006. In June 2009, an American aid worker was killed by an Al-Qaeda network for missionary activity. Additionally, although unreported, Christian converts are occasionally arrested for their faith and threatened by Islamist groups, according to local churches. Due to the difficulty of attaining information from the country, and the importance of protecting Christian converts, very little is publicized about the oppression Mauritanian Christians face. However, persecution is significant enough that Mauritania was placed as the world’s eighth worst country to be a Christian in Open Door’s 2010 World Watch List.” Please pray that Christians in Mauritania are emboldened, that the government has a change of heart in how it handles people of a minority religion, and that God reaches this African country.
