Torture Continues in African Nation

ICC Note

“Many prisoners could not talk, due to the lack of water. Their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths because they are so thirsty.”

01/27/2011 Eritrea (OneNewsNow)-Upon WikiLeaks’ release of a cable exposing the persecution of Christians in Eritrea, the Body of Christ is being asked to respond.

OneNewsNow and International Christian Concern (ICC) have both reported on the persecution taking place in the African nation, where more than 3,000 Christians are currently imprisoned for practicing their faith. (See earlier story)

According to ICC spokesman Jonathon Racho, the WikiLeaks document in part describes prison conditions and shows that roughly 600 prisoners are kept together in a 40-by-38-foot prison cell. “You can imagine how congested and cramped that could be,” he laments.

“Prisoners were fed two pieces of bread three times a day,” Racho reads from the statement. “And many prisoners could not talk, due to the lack of water. Their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths because they are so thirsty.”

While many prisoners are also kept in hot, steamy shipping containers, the ICC spokesman contends that Christians throughout the world should speak out against the inhumane treatment and the persecution that has again been confirmed.
