BJP Vows to Oppose Religious Reservation
BJP, a Hindu nationalist political party and the main opposition party in India, opposes the recommendations of government commission for Christian and Muslim Dalits to be given equal rights as Hindu Dalits.
02/20/2010 India (expressbuzz.com)-Former BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday announced the BJP resolve to oppose the move to provide reservation on the basis of religion. “We are prepared to make any sacrifice to stop this move,” he said at the party conclave here.
The leader quoted Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech to the Constituent Assembly on May 26, 1949: “If you seek to give safeguards to a minority, you isolate it. Maybe you protect it to a slight extent but at what cost – at the cost of isolating it and keeping it away from the main current… This way lies not only folly but disaster.” Describing it as communalising development, Naidu said the wooing of the Muslim community was couched in the language of minority welfare.
