AICC welcomes Andhra Govt. resolution seeking SC status for dalit Christians

09/04/2009 India (India Catholic)-The All India Christian Council (AICC) August 27 welcomed a resolution adopted by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly requesting the Central government to accord the Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians.

The resolution adopted by the Assembly, August 25, amid Opposition from the rightwing Bharatiya Janata Party and the Lok Satta party, strongly urged the Union government to grant the Scheduled Caste status to Christians from the Dalit community so that they could also enjoy the benefits from government reservation in jobs and schemes like their counterparts in other religions.

According to the 1950 Presidential Order, the Scheduled Caste privileges are meant only for Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists, but not Christians.
