Sudan Church welcomes troop withdrawal

The Sudanese government forces burned down the oil-rich city of Abeyi in May 2008. Thousands of people, including Christian South Sudanese, were affected by the attack.

08/18/2008 Sudan (Religious Intelligence)-The Church of the Sudan has applauded the withdrawal of government troops from the oil-rich Abyei region, and urged both the Khartoum and South Sudan governments to honour the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and end hostilities.

On July 30 the South Sudan army reported that troops from the Khartoum government had pulled out of the city that lies in the disputed border region between north and south Sudan . In May government troops moved into Abyei destroying the town and displacing an estimated 90,000 people.

In a July 23 statement released at the Lambeth Conference, the Primate of Sudan, Archbishop Daniel Deng of Juba called for the church to pray for the people of the war-torn country.
