One killed, 5 churches burnt in Bauchi communal clash

ICC Note

Bauchi State where the majority of the populations are Muslims was a scene of violence in which five churches were burned down. The violence in this State which is governed by Sharia law is another example of how the application of Sharia law gives rise to violence against Christians.

05.02.2008 Nigeria (Nigeria Tribune)-Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed one person dead and 44 arrested in connection with last Saturday’s civil disturbances in Yana , the headquarters of Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State, just as normalcy has started returning to the town.

Talman-Gaya added that five churches, a police station and police barracks as well as houses where policemen were living were razed by those he described as rioters.

He also said two shops belonging to non-native resident in the town were looted and burnt by the rioters who he said “capitalised on a simple love affair between two lovers to wreak havoc on innocent people of both Islamic and Christian faiths.”
