Pastor in Ghaziabad Arrested
1/24/08 India (Evangelical Fellowship of India) – The police have arrested Rev. Yashwant Paul late in the evening on January 21, 2008 in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh on charges of fraud in a case registered against him earlier in 2004. Rev. Paul and his wife Mrs. Monica Paul are co-accused in this case Under the Sections 420 and 407 of the Indian Penal Code.
The complainant, Mr. Ramesh Chand has accused Rev. Paul and his wife of having paid to him a sum of Rs. 20,000/- and for promising him a job if he converted to Christianity. However, Rev. Paul and his wife have vehemently denied the charges.
Rev. Paul is currently lodged in the District Jail, Ghaziabad, UP, after his bail plea was rejected by the magistrate. He has appealed before the Sessions Court and the case will come up for the hearing later this week.
Numerous cases such as these have been registered against pastors by Hindutva extremists to falsely implicate the Christian workers.
Prayers are requested for the release of Rev. Paul and for justice to him and his wife.
