Hindu Hot Heads Prevent Christians in Helping Stop HIV/AIDS in Tanjavur- South India

3/23/07 India (Persecution Update India) – A group of around 30 Christians from the USA arrived in Thanjavur, in Tamil Nadu on March 13th, for a HIV-AIDS Awareness Programme.

They stayed in over 25 rooms rented from a hotel close to Thanjavur railway station. They registered to stay until March 18 in the hotel rooms. They toured the villages surrounding Thanjavur to promote HIV-AIDS awareness camps and organize many such camps. They also travelled on cycle rickshaws in Thanjavur city.

Thanjavur BJP functionaries complained that the foreigners were indulging in evangelization and religious conversions in the guise of AIDS awareness camps. Thanjavur SP Anand Kumar, was informed of the ‘Conversion Activities” by the BJP City President Vinayakam, Kumbakonam VHP (World Hindu Council) Jt. Secretary Swaminathan, Advocate Santanakrishnan, RSS Suresh, Balaji.

On March 15th, on the orders of the SP, Thanjavur Police Inspectors Shivabhaskar, Murugavel and many policemen rushed to the star hotel and started investigations.

The foreigners informed the police that they went around many villages in Thanjavur region to create AIDS awareness and did not indulge in evangelization.

After the police conducted their investigations in the hotel and they found the allegations baseless.

However, following the police investigations, to prevent any untoward incident, and fearing their safety, the Christians vacated their hotel rooms that had been booked up to 18 March; the midnight scoot by the foreigners has created anxiety and tension in Thanjavur.
